The development of lighting specialization in Brazil

During my career as an architect, combined with my career in teaching, I have always tried to keep up to date with the main demands presented by the market, in order to offer ways to improve my students. Thus, we gain the segment as a whole, and even more, the performance of our profession.

In recent years, the growing interest in improving the knowledge about lighting, interest manifested in the classrooms and also in the projects which I have developed, made me devise a specialization totally designed to fill the gaps commonly left by academic courses on lighting. When approached in the grids, the subject tends to be little explored and to only appear superficially, in some cases.

That was how the course Master in Lighting and Design Practices in Architecture was born, which I coordinate and is offered in partnership with the Graduate Institute IPOG. Theme previously addressed as complementary in the Master in Architecture and Lighting; now it takes center stage in this new specialization, totally focused on the development of future light designers.

Which professionals can specialize in Lighting?

All professionals who seek to better understand the ways of applying lighting in their projects – be they architectural, engineering, among other types of projects –, benefit from the knowledge presented in a specialization in the area. Anyone who thinks that only architects and interior designers are interested in the subject is wrong.

With a practical approach, combined with the theoretical concepts that govern the behavior of lighting, we can contribute to the following areas:

– architectural projects;

– interior design projects;

– scenography;

– assembly of events;

– lighting design layout of window displays and stores;

– automation and security projects;

– among others.

What are the gains of a project that has the signature of a light designer?

I invite you to follow on this portal a series of articles that we are preparing to present innovative lighting design projects, described by the very lighting designers who sign them. This way, it will be easier to understand how lighting can enrich an environment and meet specific objectives such as:

– visual comfort;

– decorative effect;

– energy efficiency;

– confer focus to important details of an environment;

– promote visual acuity;

– stir reactions of well-being, euphoria, relaxation;

– create scenarios.

Therefore, there are countless benefits which the correct use of lighting can bring when designed by a professional. LED technology, in addition to enabling energy efficiency, opened up a wide range of light configurations and applications. Automation also brought an organized and intelligent way of thinking about lighting being used on a daily basis.

In order to enjoy its many benefits, always count on the help of a professional specialized in the area.
